United Accomplishments 2006-2007
At DuPage
United, we are very proud of the work we do in the
community. Below are a few of our more notable
accomplishments in 2006-2007.
> Two hundred people met with DuPage County Chairman
Robert Schillerstrom to preserve health and human service
funding from the county. The work continues on this issue.
> Conducted dozens of research action on workforce
housing, and held 15 education sessions on this issue. A
total of 825 people have participated.
> Leveraged support from the city of Naperville to
include affordable housing as a priority. Naperville City
Council voted to include affordable housing in their
Strategic Initiative Plan for 2007 and the city is now
exploring different solutions/policies.
> Over 200 residents of Downers Grove gathered to learn
about the housing trends and discuss possible solutions for
the lack of affordable housing. This action led to an
education session on affordable housing with Village
Council. In March, over 300 residents met with candidates
for Village Council to get specific commitments to address
this issue.
> Succeeded in getting government agencies to work
together and secure $3.6 million in funding for the Wheaton
pedestrian railroad bridge by organizing parents, students
and teachers. One child was killed before the bridge was
built.
> Established English tutoring program with adult
refugees with tutors from churches and mosques. Several
leaders from the refugee community have emerged from this
effort and are organizing their own group within the
refugee community.
> Conducted leadership training with 130 people
participating.
> Working to assure a $.25 sales tax (about $35 million
a year) collected by the DuPage Water Commission is
accountable to taxpayers.
